Girls rout Pocono West
The Whitehall field hockey team roared out of the gate with sticks a-blazin' as they blanked Pocono Mountain West High School to begin the season.
The Zephs erupted for 12 goals, as six players found the back of the cage en route to the 12-0 win.
That offensive surge was led by Taylor George who had five goals against the Panthers. Tianna Rivers rattled the ball home twice, while Kourtney Cunningham duplicated that feat. Additionally, Erin Everett, Brianna Peacock and Kylee Cunningham each scored one goal in the opener.
"It was great to get a win," said Whitehall head coach Emily Repsher. "It also gave us a chance to experiment with people in different positions."
As the game unfolded, Repsher said she was able to get everyone in the game. It also afforded her the opportunity to "test out some things." Specifically, they were able to work on a number of set plays, including corners, a large part of a team's offensive strategy.
As for George's day, Repsher said the sophomore was almost unstoppable. With a combination of tenacity and skill, she was able to assert her will in the scoring zone.
"She was just a scoring machine that day," said Repsher. "She's always very aggressive and she just had a fantastic day."
The Zephs started Gabriell Henninger in goal. The sophomore didn't face a shot during her time between the pipes. Freshman Kayla Nailor also saw time in net, stopping the only shot she faced.
It was a game that was controlled by the Zephs from the outset, peppering the Panther defense the entire game. Repsher said they had players who are expected to find the back of the net on their roster, accomplished that goal. It was simply a case of taking advantage of their opportunities.
"They were able to capitalize in front of the net," said Repsher.
After graduating a lot of scoring punch, the Zephs quickly found a host of players who can meet the challenge. Repsher said it's a talented team and they used that ability to get their first win of the season.
Assisting on the goals for the Zephs were Kylee Cunningham (2,) Cara Bonshak (2), Everett and George.
The Zephs now prepare for The Konkrete Kids and the Blue Eagles this week.
