Boys start 2-1, girls fall to 0-3

The Northampton boys soccer team picked up a win in their first game and went 2-1 overall this past week.

Against the Mounties, Sam Gaye received a long ball from Julian Santos and placed it low past keeper Nico Ruiz for an exciting 2-1 overtime win to start the season Friday afternoon. The goal came with four minutes remaining in the first overtime.

Trailing 1-0, Northampton got the tying goal with just 2:25 in regulation when Cameron Peploe finished a ball played to him from Gaye inside the 18 box. The entire play was made possible when Mike Haggerty chested a 50-50 ball and sent it deep into the teeth of the Stroudsburg defense, where Gaye won possession of the ball to find Peploe.

Stroudsburg got on the board first ten minutes into the match when John Cilli hit a point-blank shot 12 yards out for the 1-0 lead.

Aside of that play, Northampton controlled the tempo for much of the rest of the match. During the first half the Kids controlled the ball but could not generate many shots on goal. The Kids would finish the game with only 10 shots.

"We encouraged getting more balls on frame," Coach Carvin said during the halftime talk.

Carvin was happy with the way the team was able to dominate possession in the second half, and attributed the team's fitness as a key contributor to the victory.

"They earned this win for all the work they put in during June, July, and now August," he said. "They outworked Stroudsburg from the second half on. It's not easy to be able to withstand what we go through as a player, but they worked hard and earned this victory."

Yamil Yunez started in goal and made 16 fantastic saves. He saved a ball that was fired to him at point blank range early in the first half by Gabe Beebe that elevated his confidence. In the second half, Yunez was huge grabbing the ball out of mid-air during defense of corner kicks. Yunez's play has Carvin feeling very confident with both his keepers, as keeper Austin Cooper continues to fight a stomach bug.

Beating the defending District 11 champs should bolster the team's confidence as they begin LVC play next week. The Kids will take on Whitehall on Tuesday, as well as Parkland on Saturday. They will also play nonleague East Stroudsburg South on Wednesday.

The Kids would fall to always-though Pleasant Valley 2-0, in a game the Kids just couldn't get much going offensively.

NHS got off just four shots on goal. Yunez got the start in goal and made eight saves.

In an exciting game on Tuesday night at Whitehall under the lights, the Kids pulled out a 2-1, double OT victory over the Zephs.

Whitehall got on the board first on a goal by Brian Heckman.

But Sam Gaye would tie the game at 1-1 on an assist from Tim Kelly in the second half.

After a scoreless rest of the second half and first overtime, the duo would hook up again for the game-winning goal.

Austin Cooper made nine saves for the Kids.

Girls

The NHS girls soccer team is off to an 0-3 start this season.

The girls played it closer in a loss to Pleasant Valley 3-1.

The Bears Nicole Dudkewic got her team on the board first with an assist from Keri Dekmar. But NHS answered back with Haley Fribance notching her second goal of the year to make it 1-1.

Anna Keffer made four saves for the Kids.

A very good Whitehall team broke open a close game for a 7-1 victory.

The Zephs scored the first half's only goal with Kourtney Cunningham on an assist from Taylor George. But Whitehall would score six more times in the second half to make it 7-0 before Katie Miller made it 7-1 for the Kids on an assist by Haley Fribance.
