LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Western Salisbury

Well, hopefully you all made it through the first few days of school. I know it was a little rough at our house with my youngest son moving to middle school and all three boys now needing to be ready by 7 a.m. Let's just say it was a little chaotic. Hopefully, we will work out the kinks soon, and get in more of a rhythm.

Speaking of rhythm, Salisbury Township School District is looking for donations of new or used band instruments. While so many schools are making cuts to their arts programs, Salisbury is doing all it can to encourage students to participate. But instruments are expensive and not every student can afford one. So, look in your attics or deep in your closets for that old instrument that you played in elementary or high school and haven't touched since. Give it new life and maybe help out an aspiring Louis Armstrong by contacting Monica Deeb at mdeeb@stsd to make a donation.

Auditions for the Salisbury High School Fall production of "Curtains the Musical" are being held 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 20 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21. All you aspiring actors from SHS should give it a shot. I have been going to the SHS theatre programs for the last few years and I will say, I have enjoyed them all.

This is going out to all SHS juniors and seniors. Class ring orders will be taken Sept. 11 in the cafeteria during lunch.

Also coming up on the school calendar is open house in every building. The elementary schools start things off 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 9. Western Salisbury Elementary is holding open house for parents of students in grades three through five and Harry S Truman Elementary is hosting parents of students in grades kindergarten through second.

Salisbury Middle School is holding open house for all parents of students in all grades 6:45 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10. WSE is hosting open house for parents of students in grades kindergarten through second and HST is hosting open house for parents of students in grades three through five 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11.

Last, but not least, SHS is holding open house for parents in all grades 6:45 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12.

Open houses are for parents only.

More calendar events include picture day for SHS Sept. 11 and picture day for SMS Sept. 17.

SMS also started their first fundraiser of the year with the sale of KidStuff coupon books. If you do not know any middle school students and are interested in purchasing a coupon book, contact Peggy Scholl at pscholl@ stsd.org.

The Class of 2014 is the 50th graduating class of SHS! The administration and staff have big things planned to celebrate this occasion throughout the school year. First on that list, is the Homecoming football game Oct. 11. Any SHS alumni from the Class of 1965 and any former Homecoming Kings and Queens 1965 through 2013 are invited to attend and be recognized. If you are included in either of those groups, or know someone who is, RSVP by Oct. 1 to the 2014 class advisor, Jennifer Piagesi at jpiagesi@stsd.org.

Homecoming T-shirts are also for sale. They come in blue or white and short or long sleeve. For information on pricing, email jpiagesi@stsd.org.

The Homecoming Dance will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 12 in the old high school gym. I will keep you posted on any activities revolving around the 50th graduating class. I think this is an event to be celebrated and I am excited that my son gets to be a part of it. What an added bonus to all the seniors in the Class of 2014!

If anyone was wondering, my family did go on our end of summer picnic at the Lehigh Parkway this year, but we had to cut it a little short because my son Luke had a baseball game in Bowmanstown later on that evening. That is one drive I do not enjoy making for a baseball game, especially since we lost!

As my predecessor, Diane Tatum used to do; I plan on ending my columns with a quote. I hope you like them.

"An investment in knowledge, pays the best interest."
