Ernest Hertzog

Ernest R. Hertzog, 88, formerly of Emmaus, died June 10, 2013, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Renfrew. Born in Nazareth, he was the son of the Rev. Franklin and Rena (Diefenderfer) Hertzog.

He was a 1942 graduate of Allentown High School.

He served in the U.S. Army for three years in World War II in Europe.

He received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1951 and was a registered professional engineer.

He was employed by PPL Corporation for 39 years, retiring in 1990 as manager of distribution engineering and systems. He was formerly married to Margaret A. (Dill) Hertzog with whom he had three children.

He was an avid photographer, a gardener, played golf, and loved to travel, even going to Antarctica when he was in his 70s. A baritone, he sang throughout his life in various groups including the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, the Zion Choral Society, Harmenaires Quartet, and the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, of which he was a member. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by a son, Dr. David and his wife Lisa Brienza of Renfrew; two daughters, Cheryl and her husband Douglas FitzSimons and their daughter Serena, of Elverson and Karen of Stockton, N.J.; a brother, Rev. Roy and his wife Diane of Macungie.

A service will be held 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, 3231 W. Tilghman St., Allentown, 18104.
