'Good showing' Catty off to a good start in scrimmage
Even though their season-opener is two weeks away, Catasauqua's football team has already shown signs of being ahead of schedule in a much-anticipated season ahead.
The Roughies had their initial live contact with another team when they scrimmaged Lehighton Saturday, the first of two preseason tilts before they meet Wilson in their opener Aug. 31.
"It was a good showing for us," said head coach Tom Falzone of his club who is expected by many media outlets to have another stellar season. "We were able to look at a few things and work on some others.
"We didn't hit live all week, so it was good that we finally did. And it was good to see someone else.
Falzone stated the Roughies scored three touchdowns in the scrimmage and Lehighton was held scoreless. Ra'Von Burton, Devin Flores, and Jacob Stopay accounted for the scores. Burton and Flores scored on long runs and Stopay caught a touchdown pass from Zac Bradley.
"Ra'Von looked good and he ran the ball hard," said Falzone. "Devin (Flores) played defense for us all last season and he will have a role in the offense this season. He (Flores) reminds us of (recent graduate Eric) Matz running the ball."
Falzone also highlighted the play of his defense that shutdown Lehighton's offense as well as his offensive-line play that had a good day. He noted the play of Rhaine Sziy, Tyler Trobetsky, and Brandon Nosal, all of whom are returners on the line as well as Derrick Bond, who will likely play tight end and will be flexible on defense.
"We were swarming to the ball on defense and we were working on that," said Falzone. "We looked tough on defense and we did a nice job shutting them down.
"We have a number of people back on the offensive line and they appear to be in good form. Rhaine (Sziy), Brandon (Nosal), and Tyler (Trobetsky) have all been solid, and Derrick (Bond) is a true utility guy for us because he can do a number of things for us."
Catty will have its fine tune up tonight before the start of the regular season when they travel to Marian.
"We'll get a good hit from Marian," said Falzone. "They will be a challenge for us and they always play tough. It will be a hard-nosed scrimmage and we'll get another chance to look at a number of things."
