Borough busy paving roads

Northampton residents may have recently observed a flurry of activity by public works crews.

"The borough crew has been busy paving streets," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said in a report at last week's council meeting.

He said a couple of streets scheduled for paving this year will have to be delayed until 2014.

"We will not be able to pave 19th Street or 20th Street because of water company and UGI work. These streets will be put on the next year's list," said Zarayko.

"If there is time available, we will pave Laubach Avenue, from Main Street north to 14th Street. This will be paid for from bond proceeds," he said.

Streets scheduled for paving in 2013 include Second Street from Main Street to Howertown Road, a portion of Main Street at Fourth Street, 17th Street, from Newport Avenue to Canal Street, Siegfried Avenue from 23rd Street to 21st Street, Green Street from 27th Street north and 14th Street from Washington Avenue to Main Street.

Borough officials said Northampton's 2013 road improvements was an ambitious, successful project.

Councilman Keith Piescienski, public works and sewer committee chairman, said the borough public works department July 20 assisted Allen Township with a sewer blockage in the vicinity of the new apartments. It was discovered the contractor never removed the plug from the line when they were constructed. Allen Township has agreed to pay for the borough services.
