LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Donation given to Camp Olympic

Barbara Jaindl, wife of the late Timothy Jaindl, presented a donation to Lower Macungie Township for Camp Olympic at the Aug. 15 board of commissioners meeting. Jaindl had been active in basketball coaching for 12 years. The donation included three benches to be placed near the basketball courts.

The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant has been approved for the Hamilton Crossings project. This grant is administered by the Commonwealth and used for acquisition and construction of economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects. This grant is to be used for the project but if the project does not happen, the state keeps the money. The grant will be used for the remediation of the minewash area.

Ira Lehrich has offered to install a fire hydrant near the Indian Creek Storage. This offer was actually made some time ago. At the time, the fire hydrant cost $2,500 and the cost now is over $4,000. Lehrich said he would still offer the $2,500.

Macungie Ambulance Corps sent a letter of thanks for the $5,000 contribution from Lower Macungie Township.

Laura Stark, president of the Lower Macungie Lazers, thanked everyone for helping the swim team. There were 82 swimmers this year.

The bill list was reviewed and approved except for a discussion initiated by Commissioner Doug Brown over the engineering statement. There was an estimate for the Willow Lane walking project by Keystone which ended up almost doubling. Brown went on to say this can happen and there needs to be a better method for review and better knowledge of projects like this.

President Ron Eichenberg explained this project had to be completed on a timely basis. Commissioner James Lancsek said it was the nature of the project. "It was like a moving target, constantly changing."

The Willow Lane walking project is moving along and will be ready for school opening on Aug. 26. ADA ramps have been installed and crosswalks are being completed. The only item not completed is the flashing light fixtures. These fixtures will flash when there is fire activity.

Township Manager Bruce Fosselman interviewed 20 people for the crossing guard positions. There are enough crossing guards to begin the school year with all uniforms and rain gear available.

The annual approval of the three junk yard permits was granted. This was approved after inspection and checking the maintenance of the yards.

The EAC requested to amend the procedure for the appointment of the EAC chair. This is state mandated so the EAC chair will continue to be appointed by the Committee.

The Commercial Fire Inspection Ordinance was approved. Procedures for this will be discussed and the ordinance should be in place by the beginning of 2014.

The bridges at Camp Olympic will be painted. Not many bids were received but a company was chosen.
