LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Temple-bound Notaro

For the first time in a long time in his golfing career, Evan Notrao is in unchartered waters.

Notaro, who won the 2010 District 11 championship, the 2011 Lehigh Valley Tournament of Champions and the 2012 Lehigh Valley Medal Play Championship during a stellar four-year career at Northampton High School, has admittedly been struggling with his swing this summer.

Late in the spring, Notaro began to experiment in changing his swing. His trials have continued during the summer and have resulted in uncharacteristic poor play during his tournament on the Lehigh Valley tour and the US Amateur tour.

Notaro is optimistic he can rejoin his old form before he takes his game down the Pennsylvania Turnpike where he will begin a four-year career at Temple University.

"I started with the swing change and it hasn't worked well," said Notaro, who has played eight tournaments this summer. "This hasn't been a good summer for me. I changed my swing in June and I haven't adjusted to it.

"I know I have to get things straightened out soon before I leave for Temple (Aug. 26)."

However, Notaro is anxious to get his Temple career under way. He has reached out to Temple golfer Brandon Matthews, who recently won the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Open Championship.

Matthews, a Dupont native and a freshman last season, stated that it took him roughly six weeks to become comfortable with his new surroundings.

Temple will begin their first season in the Big East Conference this fall. They finished third in the Atlantic 10 Championships last fall and have produced a handful of PGA professionals through the years including current Northampton County Club pro Gary Hardin.

"Temple will be a good fit for me," said Notaro, who plans to major in risk management. "(Temple) has 21 different schools of business and business ties in well with golf. I like their program and I had a good meeting with their head coach.

"Their program has always done well. I also spoke with Brandon (Matthews) and we have spoken over the years. He told me it might take me a while to get used to everything, but he feels it will be a good fit for me."

Notaro noted how the thought of his new surroundings may have also altered his game this summer as he would normally be within a few weeks of his first high school match.

"It is a different summer and a different feeling," he said. "I'll miss the high school season, but I'm looking forward to the Temple season. It is a little rough now, but I'll get things straightened out."
