Councilman Joseph Groller will apparently serve the remainder of former Councilman Matthew Recker's term.

Recker resigned in June because he moved outside the borough.

In July, council appointed Carl Luckenbach to fill Recker's term through the end of 2013. However, a special election must be held to fill the remainder of the term, which runs through the end of 2015.

A total of seven Democrats sought the nomination for four open seats in the May primary. Luckenbach was one of them, along with Councilmen Charles Sodl, Steve Burker and Lou Bodish.

One Republican candidate, Mel Procanyn, also will appear on the November ballot.

Bodish, Sodl and Burker were seeking reelection for another four-year term. Groller chose not to run for another four-year term. However, he decided to seek a two-year term to fill out Recker's term.

John Schreiner, Coplay resident and member of the Lehigh County Democratic Party committee, announced at Tuesday's council meeting that Groller's bid for the spot on the ballot was successful.

"The party voted to have Joe Groller appear on the ballot in November to fill the two year term that was created when Matt Recker resigned," Schreiner said.

Members of the party met and voted Monday night. Party Chairman Rick Dougherty asked Schreiner to inform council, he said.

In response to a question from Bodish, Schreiner said two other candidates Beverly Miller and Frank Reichl also sought that spot on the ballot.

"I would like to say thank you to [Schreiner]," Groller said at the council meeting. "I'd like to thank the mayor ... for supporting me and I'd like to thank the council people that supported me and thank you for all the signatures that were accumulated from people in the borough."
