Now that pool season is wrapping up, members of Coplay Borough Council are eager to know how well the concession stand did.

In May, after presenting information on large losses suffered at the pool concession stand for the past five years, Councilman Charles Sodl recommended outsourcing the running of the borough pool concession stand rather than using borough employees as in the past.

John Milander, owner of Milander's Market, agreed to take on the project. In exchange for the business oppportunity, he paid the borough a $650 stipend and took over paying electricity and gas used for cooking.

"All in all he's had a good year down there. He's very happy," said Councilman Steve Burker, chair of the parks recreation committee.

Milander did really well this past Saturday when the Coplay pavilion was the site of a punk rock festival, Burker said. No one was selling food at the festival, so they bought from Milander at the pool.

Councilman Bill Leiner Jr. asked if Milander would be making a report to council on how well the concession stand fared this summer.

"I can't answer you directly because I did not approach him about that directly," Sodl said.

It would be good for Milander to give a report, said Sodl, because it would most likely prove this was the right move. Saying he and Milander agreed to be honest with each other going into this, Sodl said further information would help them decide whether $650 is a fair fee going forward.

"I know we have a good enough relationship that if he's done very well and feels the rate could go a little higher, he would," Sodl said. Likewise, if Milander didn't do as well as expected, he may request the rate be lowered. "It has to be a business decision," Sodl said.

Leiner suggested Milander provide an expense and income statement but other members of council said that may be asking too much.

Solicitor James Preston said the written agreement between Milander and the borough does not require a report of any kind.

"The only reason we're having this discussion is because it's successful," said Sodl.

Burker said he never talked about money with Milander but noted Milander never complained that he wasn't busy.

Sodl said he wants to keep the spirit of cooperation going with Milander.

"I think it's worked out good," he said.
