Northwest wins title

Northwest Swim Club won the ABE League Swimming Championships with 268.5 points, edging second place Trident Swim and Tennis Club with 241.5 points. Stones Crossing was third with 223 points.

Northwest coach Reik Foust said, "Overall, as a team, we performed better than expected. We far surpassed what we expected. It was a great day for everyone, and the team, and the swim club."

This summer, Northwest's swim team was low in numbers, and high in new swimmers. In addition, the swim club became the unexpected host of the meet.

"We weren't supposed to have it this year, but [Northwest] pulled it together in 60 days. I heard a lot of compliments about how it ran, how it looked. It was a lot of fun and a great weekend," said Foust.

The top six places in each event scored points for its respective team.

Northwest's girls 13 & over 200 medley relay team of Emily Cecchini, Chloe Kobus, Grace Walters, and Maggie Olock opened the meet with a first place victory in 2:11.53.

Cecchini said, "It was really important that we went out as powerful as we did. We were seeded first, so we wanted to start the meet off on the right foot."

Northwest's boys 13 & over 200 medley relay team of Sean Vannata, Nolan Vannata, Matt Buell, and Jacob Jones finished the second event of the day in second place with a time of 2:02.40.

In individual events, Brice Kessler won the 13-14 boys 50 free in 27.85, and Jocie Baker won the 15-18 girls 100 free in 1:03.22.

Jones placed third and Brandon Merkert placed fourth in the 15-18 boys 100 free with respective times of 1:01.04 and 1:01.16.

In the 50 butterfly, Sarah Cecchini took third place in 34.39 for 13-14 girls, Spencer Smith clinched first place in 34.97 for 13-14 boys, and Ben Stuckey took sixth place in 39.54. Grace Walters and Emily Cecchini placed first and second, respectively, for 15-18 girls with times of 31.48 and 32.00, and Olock was fourth in 32.18. Also, Merkert came in fifth place in 31.22 for 15-18 boys.

"The girls older age groups were seeded really, really well, and we won those," said Cecchini.

In the 100 IM, Kessler won for 13-14 boys in 1:15.20, and Northwest and a two-three-four finish for 15-18 girls with Kobus in 1:14.35, Baker in 1:15.60, and Walters in 1:16.53. In 15-18 boys, Sean Vannata was third in 1:07.94, Nolan Vannata placed fifth in 1:10.32, and James Sheplock placed sixth in 1:11.40.

In the 50 backstroke, Sarah Cecchini placed third in 36.92 in 13-14 girls, Kessler again took first place in 13-14 boys with a time of 33.97, and Justin Bassett placed sixth in 44.69. Emily Cecchini won in 33.69, and Caitlyn McCadden was fifth in 35.83 in 15-18 girls, while Sean Vannata placed second in 30.37 for 15-18 boys.

In the 50 breaststoke, Cowen finished third in 41.24 for 13-14 girls, Ben Stuckey was fourth in 41.07, and Spencer Smith was sixth in 42.88 for 13-14 boys. Kobus won in 38.43 for 15-18 girls, while Jess Bassett placed third in 39.80, and Abby Sine placed sixth in 44.10. Nolan Vannata took second place in 34.98 for 15-18 boys, Jacob Jones was fourth in 36.85, and Sheplock was sixth in 38.24.

Patrick Gilhool, Philip Stevens, Jacob Jones, Brice Kessler, and Matthew Johnston won the crescendo in 2:02.86 for Northwest.

At this point in the meet, Northwest was in first place, but Foust was unsure as to what the afternoon session would bring with the younger age groups.

"I thought we could score a lot in the morning with the older kids, but I didn't think we would score a lot with the younger kids in the afternoon, so our little ones really stepped up," he said.

Teresa Burke, Jackie Baker, Abigail Mack, and Greta Stuckey took third place in the 12 & under girls 200 medley relay in 2:39.88, and Phillip Stevens, Harrison Stevens, Justin Krouse, and Kyle Flickinger placed fourth in the same event for 12 & under boys.

Gilhool finished second in the 8 & under boys 25 free in 17.50, and in the 50 free, Addison Collins was third in 37.37 for 9-10 boys, and Jackie Baker placed fifth in 33.00 for 11-12 girls.

In the 25 butterfly, Gilhool won in 19.02, and Tim Wetmore placed third in 22.44 for 8 & under boys, while Elizabeth Flynn placed fourth in 18.99 for 9-10 girls.

In the 100 IM, Harrison Stevens took third place in 1:31.58 for 11-12 boys.

In the 25 backstroke, Helena Lynn placed fifth in 26.23 for 8 & under girls, Gilhool won again in 20.95 for 8 & under boys, and Wetmore placed sixth in 26.22 in the same category. Megan Nauroth and Charlotte Samuelson placed third and sixth, respectively, in 21.28 and 21.72 for 9-10 girls. Addison Collins and Benjamin Service placed second and sixth, respectively, in 20.14 and 23.22 for 9-10 boys.

Philip Stevens came in fifth in 42.37 for 11-12 boys in the 50 backstroke.

In the 25 breaststroke, Malcolm Collins placed sixth in 30.53 for 8 & under boys, Hallie Smith took second place in 21.29 for 9-10 girls, Johnston placed fourth in 23.98 for 9-10 boys, and Addison Collins placed sixth in 25.87 in the same category.

In the 50 breaststroke, Jackie Baker won with a time of 40.41 for 11-12 girls, and Harrison Stevens placed third in 46.81 for 11-12 boys.

Coach Foust was assisted by Ashley Bothwell, Evan Klokis, and diving coach, Brandon Roman.

"Brandon was new at Northwest this year. Ashley worked mostly with the younger kids, and Evan worked with the older kids. They related so well to the kids and had so much fun," Foust said.

Results from the ABE League Swimming and Diving Championships, held July 26-27 at Northwest Swim Club in Bethlehem.
