Hawks wrap up busy summer
The summer basketball season is over for all local schools and that could be a sigh of relief for many coaches. For Bethlehem Catholic's Mike Frew, that could be easily said.
Becahi played over 40 games this summer and it culminated last week when the Hawks fell to Parkland in the first round of the Cedar Beach summer league.
It ended a roughly 10-week summer gig for Becahi, which found themselves playing in Forks Township, Cedar Beach, North Catty Men's League, Stellar, Sportsfest and multiple shootouts.
"We had a really good summer at all three levels of the program," said Frew. "We were able to take some steps forward and instill the fundamentals that we like to focus on."
The Hawks added some new assistant coaches this year as well, including former Northampton head coach Ed Ohlson, who will serve as Frew's assistant on the varsity staff. Kyle Haas has also been added to the mix and Frew's third season in town seems to be transforming into an optimistic winter.
With four of five starters returning from a team that reached the District 11 3A final and the first round of the PIAA tournament, Becahi appears to be deeper, both in players and staff, to help them push forward this winter.
"We played a lot of games this summer and the guys learned a lot and the young guys got a good dose of experience," Frew said. "We'll have a deeper team this season and it was good to see the type of attendance we had in the summer. We have a lot of gym rat mentality guys on this team and they're itching to get back into the gym already."
Frew will wait on that notion, as he steps into the second phase of his summer. His wife, Jess, is the head field hockey coach at Northern Lehigh and opened camp on Monday, along with all other fall sports.
Frew now has to split his time watching his children, as his wife takes over her coaching reigns.
"She was really great about it all summer and understood that it's something that needs to be done if you want to have a successful program," he said. "Now I'm the one watching the kids and she's coaching."
