Zephyr football to host a mother's clinic
Whether it's a dive play off right tackle, or a bubble screen executed from a spread formation, the game and its attendant vernacular will be part of an effort by the Varsity W Club and the Whitehall coaching staff to immerse moms in everything football.
This Saturday kicks off the inaugural Whitehall Zephyrs Football Mom's Clinic. It will be held at the football stadium, beginning at 9 a.m. It will be Football 101 for those who wish to attend the session so they can get acquainted with the game and all its intricacies in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Mom's Clinic was the brainchild of Sherry Rex whose sons Jacob and Chad have been a part of Zephyr football, with Chad currently a junior and Jacob graduating last year. She is the driving force behind the clinic that will last for four hours, with plenty of events so they can recognize a safety blitz or a halfback option.
Gilbert said it's a creative way to tackle the questions from women whose sons or grandsons are playing football at Whitehall.
"I think it's a great idea for those who might not have the background in football," said Gilbert.
Gilbert said the day will be informative for anyone interested in learning about football, as he'll speak about the game and what it's like to run a program.
The day will also provide attendees with a number of speakers, including defensive coordinator Harold Fairclough who will talk about defense and special teams coordinator Mike Yadush who will guide the listeners through the various special units.
Gilbert's domain will be offense, and they're currently in the process of adding a league official who will speak about rules and rule interpretations.
The agenda will also cover equipment, nutrition, rules, penalties, practices, pre-game and post-game activities, among other topics. For those planning to attend, the organizers ask everyone to "wear comfortable clothes and shoes as the sessions will also include interactive drills and formations."
Gilbert said the clinic will also include a number of former players who will discuss what football has meant to them. He said it was also be an opportunity for them to speak about the role of their moms in their football lives. He said that moms have played a supportive role in their sons lives and this will be one way those players can express their appreciation.
"It's just going to be a lot of things pertaining to moms and football for the day," said Gilbert.
Gilbert, who has been coaching varsity football for 20 years, said that mom's will often centers around safety, and what he and the program can do to keep their child safe. He also said that once their child has reached the varsity level, having watched their child grow through the ranks of the feeder systems. they've overcome a lot of that apprehension. Still, it is one of their concerns.
Gilbert also said that moms take an active role in finding what their son needs when he's playing, whether it's nutritionally to keep him fit, or something to help him from getting injured.
The clinic will end with a with a friendly game of Powder Puff Football followed by a healthy lunch.
