LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Waves conclude summer swimming season

The Whitehall Waves recently concluded its summer swimming season with a record of 4-3, and a fifth-place finish in the Suburban Swim League Championships, scoring 597 points.

Waves who placed in the top three at Championships included the 11-12 girls 100 medley relay team of Martha Giletto, Julia Thomas, Katie Lutterschmidt, and Michaela Hendricks, finishing second, and the 9-10 boys 100 medley relay team of Lucas Zintel, Niki Martinovic, and Andrew Gawad, finishing third.

In individual boys events, Daniel Jablonski took second place in the 11-12 boys 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke, and third place in the 100 individual medley.

"I hope the boys stay in it. Boys are hard to find," said Stacy Lewis, president of the Waves. "Daniel swims all year round. He lives and breathes swimming."

In individual girls events, Mairead Doyle took first place in the 13-14 girls 50 butterfly (31.94), and third place in both the 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke.

"Mairead's an extraordinary swimmer. She's great with the team too. She partners with the younger ones and really roots for them," Lewis said.

Coached by Dave Wagner, who recently moved, the Waves almost doubled in size since last summer.

"He taught them good ethics, to cheer for the other team, and to buddy up with the new kids. He was the heart and soul of this team. Those will be hard shoes to fill," said Lewis.

The Whitehall Waves, a nonprofit organization, also has a fall and spring program from which recruiting is done for the summer swim team.

"Everything is volunteer, and we have outstanding parent involvement. Some parents even worked every swim meet, so I want to thank the parents because without the parents, there would be no team," Lewis said.
