Tractor-trailer rollover slows commute on I-78, South Whitehall

State Police Troop M Fogelsville say Patricia Elena Giraldo, 41, of Hellertown, was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser around 7:17 a.m. Aug. 1 eastbound on I-78, South Whitehall Township, when the car crossed into the path of a 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Peter Donald Dempster Jr., 41, of Moon Township, Allegheny County.

According to police, Giraldo apparently lost control of her car on the wet pavement.

The tractor-trailer struck the car; went off the right shoulder, up an embankment and rolled onto its driver's side.

Both Giraldo and her 15-year-old female passenger were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment of injuries, police say.

Both the car and tractor-trailer were towed from the scene.

Charges will be filed against Giraldo, police say.

Fire crews from Western Salisbury Fire Department and rescue crews from Lower Macungie Fire Department, along with EMS crews from Cetronia Ambulance Corps responded to the scene. When fire crews arrived, they found one of the two people in the car injured but not entrapped.

Several lanes of I-78 remained closed for several hours to allow state police to clear the roadway.
