Coplay Borough is getting $2,000 toward the purchase and installation of banners and welcome signs.

At its Aug. 5 workshop meeting, Councilman Charles Sodl read a letter from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation, dated July 29, saying the borough will receive the money.

Describing the foundation is the "charitable arm" of the chamber, the letter says its mission is "to improve every main street in the Lehigh Valley through targeted investments in facade improvements, streetscape designs, sidewalk beautification and other enhancement to the physical appearance of our downtowns and urban centers."

The project is estimated to cost $4,000. The borough will most likely contribute labor to install the signs, Sodl said.

"The borough shouldn't have to pay any money out," he said.

Sodl, who is also a member of the borough planning commission, said that group is talking with the Coplay Recreation and Welfare Association about partnering on the project to hang banners.

"They might go in with us and ... do a large section of the town," Sodl said.

Working together, the two groups will sell banner sponsorships in order to further defray the costs, he said.

Councilman Joseph Groller praised the rec and welfare association, saying it will provide "lots of help" with the project.

Sodl said he spoke with rec and welfare representative Al Recker.

"Al [Recker] was very enthusiastic about it. I think we can do a really good job with it," said Sodl.

In another matter involving grants, council President Lou Bodish announced the borough has received a recycling performance grant for $8,914.

The money, from the state Department of Environmental Protection, reflects borough residents and businesses recycled 555.4 tons of material in 2011.
