Northampton Community College

College earns CASE award

NCC won a silver award in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) National Circle of Excellence competition. The award was for a 60-second commercial, part of the "Where Are You Going?" campaign, about two alumni who credit NCC with their empowerment to be succesful in life. Two residents promoted

NCC has promoted two Bethlehem residents to associate professor. They are Timothy Molchany, Communication/Theatre; and Sholomo Ben Levy, History.

Fall seminars announced

The college will offer he following classes/seminars in Fall 2013: Nurturing and Flourishing in Nursing, October 4; Trending in Healthcare: How It's Connected to You,October 23; and Workplace Emergency Preparedness, Prevention and Incident Management, November 7. Faculty members honored

Several members of Northampton Community College's faculty and staff received major awards at the college's Faculty/Staff Appreciation Dinner, attended by 500 faculty, staff and guests, at the Spartan Center, Main Campus.

Awards and their recipients included:

Christensen Award for Excellence in Teaching: Jeanine Metzler, associate professor of accounting; Dick and Pat Richardson Spirit Award: Donna Acerra, professor of communications; Professional Staff Excellence Award: Tina Frindt, director driver training program; Support Staff Excellence Award: Coleen Seng; Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award: Mary Catherine Farrand; and Excellence in Non-Credit Instruction Award: Jeffrey Boerner.

Moravian College

Grigsby begins presidency

Bryon L. Grigsby '90 began his tenure as 16th president of Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary on July 1. He succeeds retiring president Christopher M. Thomforde.

Grigsby was senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va., since 2008. Under his academic leadership, Shenandoah became the first environmentally friendly laptop campus in 2009, distributing MacBook Pros and iPod Touches to all incoming students. He also shepherded the new First-Year Seminar Program called "Going Global," which provided the starting point for undergraduates to become good global citizens. He worked with the president and the vice president for development in a successful $65 million capital campaign.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Moravian College, a master's degree from Wake Forest University (which included studying at Oxford University, England) and a Ph.D. from Loyola University Chicago. He specialized in medieval literature, early modern literature, and the history of medicine; and taught taught composition, Chaucer, Shakespeare, medieval and early modern literature, and the history of medicine and disease during his career. He completed Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management program and Villanova University's graduate certificate program in project management.

Guitar festival hosted

The Moravian College Department of Music hosted the Lehigh Valley Classical Guitar Festival on June 22 in Peter Hall, Hurd Campus. The festival, directed by Moravian College alumnus James Schultheis '10, was a full-day of recitals, workshops, master classes, and concerts. This year's guest artists were Julian Gray, Serap Bastepe-Gray, Pat Sise, Mark Edwards, Glenn Caluda, and David Pace. The event is co-sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Classical Guitar Society, www.lvcgs.org.

College gets high rating

Moravian College is ranked No. 26 out of 401 Pennsylvania colleges and universities for greatest lifetime return on investment (ROI) according to a recent survey. Graduates from Moravian enjoy an earnings gap of $568,900 above non-degree holders over 30 years, and earn more on average than graduates from most other Pennsylvania schools. Writer's conference gets grant

Moravian College will receive a grant from The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (BFAC) in support of its first annual writers' conference, "Life Histories: Discovering self, community and world." The June 6-8, 2014, open to the public event will feature nationally known writers Ursula Hegi and Lauri Halse Anderson as keynote speakers.

Health administration degree offered

Moravian College, in partnership with two other programs, is now offering a Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) degree program. It is the only master's degree offered by a college or university in the Lehigh Valley focusing exclusively on developing the knowledge and skills of current and future managers in the healthcare industry.
