SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY
Whitehall student participates in summer program
Luke Serensists is participating in the Saint Joseph's University Summer Scholars Program.
Serensists is one of 114 students who engaged in faculty-mentored research and creative projects at the university this summer. The chemical biology major worked with Jean Smolen, Ph.D. on the topic, "determination of ionic and inorganic concentrations in the Belmont water supply and Saint Joseph's University's campus."
The program requires students to work exclusively with a faculty member to produce a written description of their research that will be published by the university, and to present their findings next spring during the Celebration of Student Achievement event. For their work, students receive a stipend, on-campus housing and the opportunity to participate in social and educational programs.Research topics range from local and national issues in the sciences, business, education and history to extended analysis of literature and fine arts.

Area students selected to dean's list
Vanessa Rappold of Coplay and Elizabeth Urban of Northampton were recently named to the Rider University dean's list for the spring 2013 semester.
Rappold is a sophomore behavioral neuroscience major and Urban is a sophomore majoring in biology.

Local students make dean's list
Felicia Lynch and Samuel Taschler of Whitehall have been named to the dean's list at Fairleigh Dickinson College.
To qualify for the dean's list, a student must carry a 3.2 or better GPA out of a possible 4.0 and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 letter-graded hours (four courses).

Hunter graduates
Ashley Hunter of Northampton received a bachelor of arts in elementary education during Rider University's 148th commencement held recently.
Hunter was also named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Rider

Gilio named to dean's list
David Gilio of Bath has been named to the spring 2013 dean's list at University of the Sciences. Gilio is a doctor of physical therapy student.
Selection is based on completing and passing all assigned courses with no grade below a C and attaining an academic average of at least 3.4 for courses taken in the spring of 2013.

Ritter receives science award
Joshua Ritter of Catasauqua received the Dr. Jere R. Holman Science and Mathematics Eductation Scholarship from Shippensburg University.
Ritter, a 2011 Catasauqua High School graduate, is a sophomore at Shippensburg majoring in mid-level mathametics and science education.

Rex receives masters degree
Alyssa N. Rex of Coplay earned a master of medical science – physician assistant degree from Arcadia University during the school's graduate commencement in May.

Students named to dean's list
Alicia Becker of Bath and Timothy Lahr of Northampton have been named to the Central Penn College dean's list for the spring semester.
Becker is majoring in business administration and Lahr is a criminal justice administration major.
To qualify for the designation, a studnt must carry six or more credits and earn a GPA of 3.5 or better for the term.

Navarre named to dean's list
Lauren M. Navarre, a 2014 doctor of pharmacy candidate, has made the Temple University School of Pharmacy dean's list for the spring 2013 semester.
Navarre had to score in the top 16 percent for dean's list status. Navarre is a 2007 graduate of Allentown Central Catholic and works part time as a pharmacy intern for Newhard Pharmacy in Northampton.
She is the daughter of of Ron and Denise Navarre of Northampton.

Morekin-Hippenstiel receives NJCAA award
Melanie Morekin-Hippenstiel of Whitehall was recently awarded the 2013 NJCAA Academic All-American Award and the William F. Bearse Scholar Athletic Award.
Morekin-Hippenstiel who has played softball the past two years, was a Region XIX All-Academic Team Honoree for spring 2012 and 2013.
She was named to the All-Region softball team and the EPAC all-conference team as a pitcher with a 3.15 ERA and batting .396 with 4 homeruns and 34 RBIs.
UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND
Foster to attend University of Rhode Island
Brian Foster will attend the University of Rhode Island beginning the 2013 fall term where he will pursue a Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree. He is a recipient of the University's Centennial Scholarship.
A graduate of Allentown Central Catholic, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Viking Ambassadors and participated in Science Olympiad and track and field and soccer teams.
In community efforts he served as a Junior Board of Directors Member of Camelot for Children, member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church Senior High Youth Group and altar server. Foster also took part in community service for Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown, and participated in their "Inspiring Hearts" student shadowing program in partnership with Allentown Central Catholic High School.
