Allen to add officer

The task of sewage enforcement has become more of an issue in Allen Township.

Housing developments in the southern sector of the township get hooked up to sewers aligned with the Borough of Northampton's wastewater treatment plant.

At its recent meeting, the township board of supervisors agreed to hire an additional sewage enforcement officer. Township Engineer Brian Kocher was granted permission to hire a qualified person.

In other business, the supervisors heard a presentation from Holly Edinger, director of sustainable development for the Lehigh Valley Economic Development. She discussed a project titled Envision Lehigh Valley, whose goal is to address future needs of the region and its residents.

She said local elected officials will be asked for input to come up with a viable community plan for the Lehigh Valley. Key plans to be developed include jobs, housing, a regional affordable housing plan and economic development.

One township resident remarked the plan should retain the rural character of the township.

Also at the meeting, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was granted approval for a minor subdivision and Assumption B.V.M. Church, Northampton, was given permission to put up signs for its annual picnic.

The Allen Township Volunteer Fire Company reported a dwelling fire in June on Frank Drive. It also responded to a fire on Almond Drive in Lehigh Township as well as five auto accidents, one brush fire, one elevator rescue, one odor investigation and one airport alert. The fire company answered to 16 alarms, 1 ambulance assist and completed 132 training hours of training.
