The afternoon of July 16, story hour at the Coplay Public Library began with children gathering together in the comfort of beanbag chairs in a cozy corner.

Lisa Michalski, a volunteer from the Disney Store, read five books to the children as part of the weekly event at the library this summer. It takes place 2 p.m. Tuesdays through the end of the summer reading program Aug. 10. That means Tuesday, Aug. 6 will be the last session.

The selection of books July 16 included "Curious George Bakes a Cake," "The Good Little Bad Little Pig" and "The Ugly Caterpillar."

"The Ugly Caterpillar" left an impression on the young readers who learned from the story "what you look like on the outside isn't as important as what you look like on the inside."

Summer reading activities continued with Construction Day July 17.

This event – in tune with the library's summer reading program theme, "Dig into Reading" – fascinated many kids with a backhoe and a dig in a large bucket of dirt.

The children were able to see the backhoe and learn about it from Coplay Public Works Director Daniel Pavelko and each youth had a chance to raise and lower the bucket.

Participants then dug into a bowl of dirt that concealed many treasures, from coins to foam baseballs.

Fresh lemonade was made for the kids, poured for them by library volunteers and staff.

"A Bug's Life" was shown during movie night July 25.

Mineral Mania is set for 6 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Aug. 1. Kids "pan" for objects, learn about the earth's layers and even get to break a geode and take it home.

Adults get to enjoy the program "Edible Landscaping," led by a master gardener from the Penn State Cooperative Extension, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The summer reading program concludes with a party for children Aug. 10. All participants in the summer reading program will receive an invitation.
