Lehigh Township committee to set guidelines for public works department
Frank Zamadics, road foreman, and Alice Rehrig, township manager, have been discussing whether the position of an assistant road foreman should be a part-time or full-time job.
A committee was formed at the July 23 Lehigh Township supervisors' meeting to hold a joint meeting with Rehrig, Zamadics and two supervisors.
Keith Hantz volunteered as one of the supervisors. He said he has ideas on both part-time or full-time work and the advantages and disadvantages of both. The committee will meet Monday from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
The Lehigh Township Fire Company is requesting the township provide assistance with paving its parking lot. A single chip coating was planned, but the company was advised double chip would last longer.
Rehrig was asked if there is money in the budget. She said there is money set aside for the fire company and, at the end of the year, it will be deposited into a truck fund. It is the fire company's decision if it wants the truck money used for paving.
Supervisor Keith Hantz said the township should provide assistance only where the trucks move in and out. That truck use area is 1,880 square feet. Hantz said he has served on the board for 12 years. He added the supervisors have never authorized the purchase of a truck.
Supervisor Sandy Hopkins said she thinks the township should at least provide a portion of the funds to the fire company.
Fire Chief Rick Hildebrand said he does not have a position on the matter because it is a project of the trustees.
Rehrig was authorized by resolution to execute and file grant documents for $176,000 allocated to the township from a county fund. It is a matching grant but the match can be composed of in-kind work or by another grant.
The Lehigh Township Lions donated $500 for maintenance at Bryfogle Field.
Also during the meeting, it was announced the work has been completed with updating the fuel tanks. The work cost $1,700 to meet new state regulations.
Well drilling is complete with a good volume of water. It is in the testing stage.
The township description of the job of assistant crew leader was forwarded to the union. The response included only small items. The contract is for a temporary position and the township would like for it to be a permanent position.
The City of Bethlehem Health Department is asking municipalities in northeastern Pennsylvania to make parks tobacco free. The supervisors want time to look over the information provided.
The Lehigh Township Athletic Association has its own regulation about "no smoking."
Solicitor David Backenstoe has a release from the lien on the roads in the Hills at Greenock making it possible for the township to take over the roads. On the question of paving, only that portion where there are homes will be done, if any.
Engineer Phil Malitsch, Backenstoe and representatives from PennDOT met at Walnut and Steeple roads. He was impressed by PennDOT's knowledge of the problem.
Several plans were discussed and it is expected there will be further meetings.
Backenstoe drew up an agreement for the fire company to draw water from a pond. Hildebrand said the wording of the agreement is the same that has been used in other places.
