Since 1995, Coplay has participated 17 times in the annual National Night Out, a step taken to combat crime across the country, in which residents of a neighborhood band together to host parties, cookouts and other activities.

This year, Coplay will hold its 18th National Night Out Aug. 6 at the American Club of Coplay Pavilion, 300 Cherry St., said Town Watch Vice President Bill Leiner Jr.

Prior to the most recent meeting July 17, Town Watch President Carl Unger resigned after serving three and a half years. At the meeting, Leiner appointed Frank Reichl to the spot.

Coplay received national awards for the Town Watch in the past, but the borough will not be seeking the award this year. Time and effort is required to advertise for the event, its activities and speakers, as well as keep a record and draft a report.

Preparation has been under way for the National Night Out since March. The theme, speakers, activities and food must all be planned far in advance.

According to Leiner, there are about 20 volunteers assisting with the National Night Out and the number may grow larger. However, since this is not Coplay's first year participating in the National Night Out, it is easier to prepare for as Town Watch members know what they are dealing with in advance.

"It's pretty routine," Leiner said.

The theme of this year's Night Out in Coplay is "Let's Run Crime out of Town."

The event will feature speakers such as Sheriff Ronald Rossi, Mayor Joseph Bundra and Pa. State Rep. Dan McNeill, D-133rd.

A few of the organizations that will be present include the Crime Victim Counseling Center, the Coplay Fire, EMA and various police departments, Communities that Care and the Feral Cat Committee.

There will be plenty of food for everyone, including hot dogs, chips, water and soda, watermelon and cookies.

Activities and fun for children, such as a moon bounce, face painting, Play-Doh, a lollipop tree and Tootsie the Clown will be sure to please. There will also be music, but to date, it is undecided whether there will be a disc jockey or other means to provide the musical entertainment.

A classic car display will include unique automobiles of the area and individuals are invited to bring their own vehicle. Also, a free raffle for two 16-inch children's bicycles will be held.

The Crime Chicken is Coplay's Night Out mascot. The mascot's purpose is to teach the lesson, "Don't be chicken; call the police!"

The Town Watch hopes to run crime out of town with this annual event Aug. 6.
