Williams sets new stardards at LHS
It was a stat line that showed the versatility and importance that KJ Williams has on the football field.
Following last year's 41-14 victory over Freedom, Williams shined as he perhaps has never done before on the gridiron, hauling in six catches for 137 yards, including a 66-yard TD, along with two interceptions, as well as another defensive TD. Throw in his punting and kicking duties and his kickoff return skills and Williams was the best football athlete in the Lehigh Valley Conference last season.
He caught 59 passes for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. His 59 catches in one season set a school-record at Liberty, but Williams will continue to shatter Liberty's receiving marks this season, as he already owns the record for career catches (98), receiving yards (1,691) and touchdowns (22).
It's part of the reason why Division-I schools lined up to make him part of their program before he ultimately decided to sign with Syracuse earlier this month.
A member of the LVC championship basketball team at Liberty last season, as well as a track and field contestant, Williams resume from his junior year helped solidify himself as Liberty's Male Athlete of the Year.
"I've been playing football for 12 years and basketball for 10 years," Williams said. "Football is by far the sport I love the most and becoming a D-I football player was always a dream of mine."
That dream is now a reality as Williams heads into his senior year as one of the top 25 rated football players in Pennsylvania. Coming off a 3-7 season last year, Williams will be looked upon to not only be the best player in the conference, but also one of the team leaders in the locker room in order to help Liberty turn things around this season.
"I just want to win, work hard and stay humble," said Williams about his expectations this fall. "One of the big reasons I wanted to make a decision about college before the season was so I could enjoy my senior year. I didn't want to have college coaches knocking down my door everyday during the season. It's a big relief to have that out of the way and it'll help me focus on Liberty football."
Williams also excelled on the hardwood as one of the primary players on the basketball team last year, helping the team defeat Parkland in the LVC title game last winter 66-48. Williams scored 17 points and recorded nine rebounds in that game and averaged 11.43 points a contest, along with 6.5 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in scoring with 320 points and third in rebounding (182). He scored a career-high 31 points against Central Dauphin last season and had five double-doubles a year ago.
He enters his senior season as one of the two main returners on the team, along with forward Deshawn Oyeniyi.
"We still have to work hard and stick together because we lost a lot of guys from last year," said Williams about the prospects of the basketball team this winter. "People are going to look to Deshawn and myself a lot this year and we're going to have to take on that role."
It's a role that Williams should be comfortable in following football season, where all eyes will be on him.
"I just want to make the playoffs this year to be honest," Williams said about the football season. "I'm looking forward to getting into camp and working with everyone. I think it's going to be a fun year and I can't wait."
