Research revealed a historic caboose had been sitting on the wrong wheels.

The IRT caboose No. 6 sat for many years at the Whitehall Parkway before the Ironton Rail-Trail Oversight Commission took on the project of restoring it.

Wanting to make the restoration as authentic as possible, IRT members researched the caboose and discovered it was actually sitting on wheels intended for a boxcar, said commission member Joseph Bundra, who is also Coplay mayor.

A set of authentic caboose wheels was donated and, when the caboose was relocated to a spot near the trailhead in Stiles last year, the authentic wheels were used, Bundra said.

The IRT commission did not let the boxcar wheels go to waste, however.

Last month, Craig Sidlick, owner of Sidlick LLC, donated manpower and a crane to move the boxcar wheels to two different spots on the trail, Bundra said.

Each set of four wheels weighs about 9,300 pounds, Bundra said.

Workers cut the track on which the two sets of wheels sat, and moved one set to the Saylor kilns and another to the Biery yard, Bundra said.

The move required approximately 30 man-hours, all donated by Sidlick, he said.
