Fullerton Connie Mack ends 12-win season
Fullerton's Connie Mack team had a tale of two seasons this past year.
First, there was the regular season in which it made a late-season rush to the playoffs and eliminated Lehigh Township in two consecutive games. Second, there was a disappointing showing in the Connie Mack state playoffs.
Overall, Fullerton finished with an overall 12-8-1 mark and gained some satisfaction along the way.
"I am very pleased about the entire season," said head coach Jeff Scheuren. "This was a true team effort here. No one thought they were better than anyone else. The kids worked very hard. I just hated to see the season end the way it did."
In the Connie Mack state tournament, Fullerton gave up four unearned runs in the first inning against Warminster and couldn't recover in a 14-4 defeat in the double-elimination tournament against teams from the Bux-Mont Connie Mack League. Fullerton was held to five hits in the opening game.
During the second game, Fullerton had a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning against Nazareth with the potential to score more. But Scheuren said one of his players was called out on strikes and eventually ejected for arguing the call.
Unfortunately, Scheuren didn't have any bench players left and his team was forced to forfeit the game.
"We shouldn't have argued the call and we had a great chance to win that game," said Scheuren, who noted the Bux-Mont teams won all of their first-round games against Lehigh Valley teams. "I'm going to follow up with the league officials about the call, but I know the call can't be reversed.
"The teams from there (Bux-Mont) may be better than the teams from Lehigh Valley. They have different levels in their Connie Mack and Legion leagues and have more depth. But they (Warminster) were a better team than us."
Overall, Alex Bruneio was the team's leading hitter with a .410 average and Jimmy Scheuren hit .404. The manager also credited Jeremy Cordova, who developed into a consistent hitter. Bruneio was also a staple on the mound all season along with teammates Jacob Fink and Dalton Buskirk.
Scheuren announced that he won't return as manager next season as he will move on with his son, Jimmy, to the legion level. Still, he believes the team will have a good foundation for next season.
"There should be about half the players back next season," said Scheuren. "They grew as a team and they are ready to take the next step."
