LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Farmers market going strong

The Northampton Farmers Market on the upper reaches of Main Street is growing.

Borough council was told at Thursday's meeting the fledging market is adding a fourth vendor.

Victor Rodite, borough planner, said he is optimistic about the farmers market only open two Tuesdays 3-7 p.m. Despite last Tuesday's oppressive heat, the turnout was considered very good.

The two local farmers and a third vendor selling homemade kiffles fared well, with people lining up as soon as the market opened. The new vendor will be the third one offering fresh produce at the market, located between 20th and 21st streets, on the east side of Main Street.

Rodite, who labored hard to bring the farmers market to the borough, said plans are in the works to have product demonstrations in the near future. Entertainment may also be added.

Creating handicapped parking for farmers market patrons was also discussed because people have been seen shopping at the market in wheel chairs.

On Tuesdays, a large sign at 21st and Main streets is erected to direct the public to the market.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski said a walkway could help customers reach the market from the rear of the property. He also said the borough's trailer, a makeshift stage is used at various events, could be used for demonstrations.

The market is expected to be open Tuesdays until sometime in October. Discussions have also centered around creating a minipark of which the market would be part.

Council President John Yurish commended Rodite for the work he has put into the project.
