For the second time in two months, the Coplay Library Board elected officers.

As previously reported, Janet Eisenhauer is the new president.

Other officers chosen July 11 include Faye Schreiner, vice president, and Karen Shields, treasurer. Jane Gillespie remains secretary.

The board also made a number of changes to library operations.

First, it voted unanimously to hire attorney Jack Stover on an as-needed basis at $165 per hour. Stover is also the solicitor for the Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority.

Previously, the library did not have an attorney.

"I really do feel with the referendum and with all the legal issues coming up that this is something we would need," said Eisenhauer.

Stover will attend the Aug. 8 meeting to introduce himself.

Another procedural change involves signing checks. Instead of having bookkeeper Teri Holderman sign everything herself, two signatures will be required. The board voted unanimously to have Treasurer Karen Shields provide the second signature.

Eisenhauer, who has a background in treasury management, said the procedural change is no reflection on Holderman.

"That is just common practice anymore," she said.

The library board also voted to purchase supplies through the Coplay Borough office.

Board members asked for receipts for supplies previously purchased in order to get a handle on how much supplies cost and how much is used in a given period.

The board also decided on a formal practice of sending thank you cards once a month to people who make donations to the library.

"Those are the extra touches that mean a lot to the community," said Eisenhauer.

The board plans to have Mark Sullivan, district consultant librarian for Allentown District Libraries, come in and make a presentation to the board.

"My job is also to be there for boards to be a resource for you, to help you understand what is expected of library boards," said Sullivan, who attended the July meeting.

"This is a bigger job than a lot of people realize," he said, adding that many regulations are in place that the average person may not realize.

He said he is available to answer questions from both the library board and Coplay Borough Council.
