The two-story red brick building on the grounds of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Coplay, will become the parish's heritage center, according to Monsignor John Martin, pastor at St. Peter's.

The building, which previously served as a convent and a preschool, is said to be in very good condition.

The building was vacant due to the consolidation of Christ the King School on the St. Peter's grounds in Coplay with Our Lady of Hungary School, Northampton, now named Good Shepherd in Northampton.

When the decision was made to raze the three-story brick Christ the King School – erected in 1927 as a combination school, church and living quarters for the nuns who taught at the school – it was also said the former convent would remain.

Martin said no decision has been made regarding the site of the former school and church building. The demolition was completed in May.

A committee is working with Martin to decide what, if anything, will occur on the tract.

Along with parking, a picnic pavilion was discussed by some parishioners.

Martin said volunteers are painting rooms in the former convent. Improvements are planned for the exterior, but none of the renovations will be extensive.

The heritage center will display various church memorabilia.
