Families walk for diabetes

Father's Day seems to convey a time where dad sits in the easy chair all day, but that is not the case in Catasauqua.

If dad decided against the Suburban North YMCA's 5K run, there was a 1K scenic walk around town. Then Team JDRF finished off the morning with Catasauqua's Walk for Juvenile Diabetes.

Colleen Epinger of Allentown and Debra Weider of Catasauqua are lifelong friends who provided the impetus behind Catasauqua's Walk for Juvenile Diabetes.

"We raised a little over $1,000," said Epinger after a last-minute check of her email.

Corporate sponsors for the event included Daku's Auto Body Shop, Bindics Printing, Egypt Star Bakery, Wegman's, Stroehmann Bakery, IronPigs and Rock Hill Concrete.

Local sponsors included Tommy Burke Provision Company, DnD Market and Deli, Catasauqua Market, Carmen's Italian Family Restaurant and Sensational Dips. John Stoffa, Northampton County Executive, chipped in his support and the Borough of Catasauqua provided the venue.

"It wasn't billed as a race," said Weider. "We wanted to walk around town and make people more aware of the programs available."

The sojourn had a break and sugar testing station at the George Taylor House.

The group gathered back at the large pavilion in municipal park for hot dogs and prizes. Everyone who participated got a seasoning mix for habanera dip, which adds a whole new dimension to tortilla chips.

For those looking for a more sedentary plan for Father's Day, the Lehigh River Blues Jam fired up its amplifiers at noon for families lounging in portable chairs spread out on the grassy knoll in front of the amphitheater at the municipal park.

The weather was nice enough to encourage some pool lounging at the park as well.
