Borough keeping eye on projects

Northampton Borough officials are keeping a watchful eye on two residential apartment/condo projects.

Although condos planned for a vacant tract behind Redner's mini mart and gas station and the CVS Drug Store off 21st and Main streets received council approval, a Bethlehem Township developer has not committed to presenting a construction timetable.

The project has appeared on the borough's agenda over the past several years. The tract is located on land which several decades ago housed Cross Country Clothes, an apparel manufacturer.

The 14-unit apartment complex planned for the former Tama Clothing Manufacturing plant on Main Street has received approval from council. The new Jersey developer has plans for a complete makeover for both the interior and exterior of the three-story structure, which became blighted after years of sitting idle. It is expected major work on renovating the building will begin soon.

A project to change the former two-story brick building which years ago served as the borough's first high school has died. The Northampton Area School District owns the building, which at one time also was the location for a youth center. The borough acquired the building from NASD, but later relinquished ownership.

"The project is dead in the water," according to borough Manager Gene Zarayko.

Ingress, egress and parking issues were never resolved, Zarayko said.

The renovations done to the former Clyde Clothing Manufacturing plant at Main and Ninth streets, which was turned into apartments, has worked out well.

An Italian restaurant featuring dinners and pizza has opened in the town's north end.

A sit-in restaurant on Main Street, off 10th Street, has opened under new management.
