A little over nine years ago, we brought a little puppy, part Lab and part German Shepherd home. We named her Anthracite, nickname Annie, because she was as black as, you guessed it, coal. She was the fierce defender of our home, first rate rabbit chaser, able to open the back door with her paws, and, true to her Lab heritage, always on the lookout for food, especially peanut butter. Sadly, despite a clean bill of health in February, she became ill in April and was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout her final days she maintained her fierce determination and persisted on going on neighborhood walks even as she struggled to breathe. On July 4 the struggle became too much for Annie and she passed away surrounded by her family. We will miss her.
The next township column will be published Aug. 21; copy deadline is Aug. 15.
