A former quarry in Whitehall continues to be a dump site for New Jersey debris.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said Monday between 80 and 100 triaxle trucks have been recorded daily taking debris from New Jersey to Coplay Aggregates, located off West Coplay Road.

Earlier it had been believed the caravan of triaxle trucks coming to Whitehall would be temporary.

The trucks are disposing of debris dredged from waterways following Hurricane Sandy.

PennDOT is set to place weight restrictions on two bridges – the state bridge at Cementon which crosses the Lehigh River with Northampton on the east side, and the Route 22 Bridge at Route 145.

Many of the trucks exit Route 145/MacArthur Road and travel on Chestnut Street, turning onto West Coplay Road before entering the Coplay Aggregates property. Bridge weight limits could impact the number of triaxle trucks coming to the reclamation site.

Hozza said the township truck weight team continually has personnel and equipment out. Their job is to ensure the operators of the trucks follow all traffic laws and meet safety requirements, such as proper brakes, tires and licensing.

Violators are cited. In some instances, according to police, the violators are placed out of service.

Because the state officials have approved the Coplay Aggregates dump site, the township cannot otherwise control the truck traffic.
