An addition to the Islamic Center of the Lehigh Valley, under construction on Schadt Avenue, does not exceed the township's 35-foot height limit.

At Monday's meeting, township Engineer Frank Clark responded to inquiries from the Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners regarding whether the addition, which will house a school, meets the 35-foot height limit.

The large bright blue dome, perched on top of the entrance doors, does not figure into the 35-foot height requirement, according to Clark.

"It is no different than the spire at a church," Clark told The Press.

Clark also said the windows which circle the bottom of the dome are part of the design, allowing daylight into the lobby.

Word that the interior of the dome would house a place for people inside is merely a rumor, he added.

As construction continues, issues with landscaping will be addressed, Clark said.

The building was originally constructed in 2012.

At an earlier meeting, Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. had said letters have been sent to nearby residents and board members of the Islamic Center.

Hozza hopes to get residents together so he, along with Clark and township officials, can address residents' concerns.

These include noise from the construction and safety of children as work continues.

Increased traffic on Fridays, when the center has services, was another concern raised by a resident.
