Fullerton knocks off Lehigh Township in game one

Fullerton head coach Jeff Scheuren believed his team was peaking at the right time when they opened the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack playoffs with a 13-9 victory over Lehigh Township in the opening-round, best-of-three series.

Entering the playoffs as the number nine seed, Fullerton broke open a 9-9 deadlock in the top of the seventh inning plating four runs behind the hitting of Dalton Buskirk (two RBIs in the inning), and Alex Bruneio and Tim Scheuren (one RBI apiece).

"Those guys had big games for us in the win," noted Scheuren. "They have been doing it for us all season. But we have also had a solid team effort all year as well."

An opening-game victory further extended their late-season series of heroics that helped propel them into the playoffs after a mediocre start to their season. The two teams met again Wednesday night in Fullerton, after Press deadlines, and have a possible tie-breaker game scheduled at Lehigh Township Friday night.

"It was an exciting game and a good win for us," said the head coach. "We believe we are peaking right now. When we have our full team together, we have a solid team. We wanted to play our best ball in the second half of the year, and the kids have been playing well."

On the mound against Lehigh Township, Buskirk threw the first four innings before Bruneio took over in the fifth. DJ Laky pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory.

"Dalton (Buskirk) threw a nice game, but Bruneio ran into some trouble," said Scheuren. "DJ came in and then closed it out for us."

In the lone meeting between the two teams during the regular season, Lehigh edged Fullerton, 8-7.

"They are a good team and a number of our guys know their guys," said Scheuren. "We also faced their best pitcher and our bats came out against him. It is a good matchup for us. Now, we have to keep moving forward."
