Coplay makes playoffs

Baseball is about adjustments, and Coplay manager Louie Falco believed his team's ability to win their last two games and make the playoffs was indicative of one such determined change.

It didn't come at the plate or in the field, but in their mental outlook, according to Falco.

"They definitely had a better attitude," said Falco. "A couple of the guys started picking it up a little more, and it started to take off from there."

It helped them defeat Lower Macungie and South Parkland, finishing the season at 7-11 which locked them in the seventh spot and a date with Southern Lehigh in the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday.

Along with their attitude adjustment, Falco said one main reason they were able to secure a berth in Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs is a strong rotation led by Daniel Lloyd. Lloyd has two wins and a 1.39 ERA. Coplay can also rely on the able arms of Khristian Polanco (3.91 ERA) and Matthew Hassick (3.23 ERA).

In fact, Falco believes their pitching will be the bedrock upon which their playoff fortunes will be built.

"I'm counting on our pitching to pull us through the playoffs," said Falco.

The team also benefited from their "bats coming alive," said Falco. They scored 12 runs in their two wins to end the season. In their win over Lower Macungie, Lloyd was 1-2 with two RBIs; Jon Winter was 2-3 with and RBI, and Dominic Sinatore was 1-3 with an RBI. The South Parkland win was highlighted by Lloyd's perfect day at the plate, going 3-3 with three RBIs. Also, Polanco was 2-3 in the 6-1 win.

Falco said that Lloyd has been a n integral part of their team, both at the plate and on the mound. Lloyds has a .455 batting average to go along with his sub .200 ERA. Falco also said that Tyler Sweeney has also left a big mark on the season, as has Polanco

William Kovalenko III is also wielding a hot bat, hitting .333, while Sweeney is packing some wallop with a .350 mark. Additionally, Sinatore is batting .350, and Polanco is crushing it at a .429 clip.

Coplay's rise was also fueled by "playing a little more heads-up ball," said Falco. They are riding a two-game winning streak and he believes they are in good position to continue their upward trajectory.

"We're going in with a good momentum." said Falco.

They open the playoffs against Southern Lehigh at Limeport Stadium, and Falco will hand the ball to Lloyd to open the postseason. Falco said that they'll need Lloyd to pitch a good game to get them into the semifinal round.

"We just need him to pitch the way he's been doing it for us all year," said Falco.

Falco believes they've turned a corner offensively, showing signs they can bunch hits, mixing in extra base hits during the game to get them rolling. He said they'll need to continue that trend if they expect to be successful in the playoffs.

"We're excited to get going," said Falco.
