Michele Gruber's tenure as president of the Coplay Library Board lasted six days.

Former library board President Natalie Reichl resigned May 23 – just two days after the primary election, when voters approved a dedicated library tax. She did not give a reason for her resignation.

"I wanted to let all of you know I am resigning from the library board, effective immediately," she wrote in an email to the board. "I have enjoyed working with all of you and am so happy that the voters came out to support the library. You will all continue to do great work, and I'm always available as a volunteer."

Gruber was elected president at the board's June 13 meeting.

In an email sent June 18 to other board members and borough Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek, Gruber resigned, "effective immediately."

Her email says she values the library and its programs.

"However, as the days and months go on, there has been more and more negative behavior, talk and actions that I don't feel are an asset or in the best interest of the library or our community," she wrote. "I can not continue to be in this situation."

"I am surprised, astonished, disturbed," said Councilman Bill Leiner Jr. at council's July 2 workshop, adding that he thought those who worked to get the referendum passed would be happy. "Then I see people leaving. There's apparent turmoil."

"You know what that indicates to me, lack of courage," said Councilman Charles Sodl, adding the library board failed to account for uncollectible taxes when it decided to ask voters for 0.38 mills.

Janet Eisenhauer, who was appointed to the library board at it's June 11 meeting, was elected vice president at the board's June 13 meeting. The board will have to choose a new president and vice president at its next meeting tonight, Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. at the library, 49 S. Fifth St.
