LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Signing Day

Editor's Note: This is part two of Whitehall's signing day. Part one ran in the June 20 edition.

For Michael Leonhardt, the decision to attend Lehigh University this fall rested squarely on what the school offered academically for the track and field standout. Having investigated other schools that had engineering departments, most had single four-year degree programs.

While they were attractive, Leonhardt opted for Lehigh University since he was accepted into their Integrated Business and Engineering Honors program. This four-year program will give Leonhardt a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Engineering.

Leonhardt said he plans to major in mechanical engineering and is looking forward to then challenges it presents. With such a heavy academic workload, Leonhardt is still contemplating a track and field career as a Mountain Hawk.

"I haven't fully decided," said Leonhardt. "It's still something I'm probably going to do."

As a talented 800 meter runner at Whitehall, Leonhardt experienced a lot of individual successes. However, as a member of this year's 4x800 relay team, he got to experience history, twice helping to set the school record in that event.

It was that experience that made a big impression on Leonhardt.

"If anything, it was how being part of a team, you can accomplish more things working together," said Leonhardt.

Elliot Mortimer is packing his bags for York College of Pennsylvania. It will be his new home, one where he'll be a member of the Spartan pitching staff under manager Mike Scappa.

York College, which plays in the Capital Athletic Conference, posted a 22-21 record this year, finishing fifth in their league.

Mortimer, who finished this season 8-0 as a starter, visited the campus last summer and immediately knew that it was the right place to continue his playing career.

"When I met with the coaches and some of the players, it was like a big family up there," said Mortimer.

It also offers what he wants to study, another decisive factor in the decision. Mortimer said that he'll be majoring in sports management.

Nicole Umbenhauer, who made an impact in girls basketball and track and field, has put her name on the dotted line to attend DeSales University this fall.

Her primary focus was to get a good education, and the school in Center Valley, Pa. fit the bill.

Umbenhauer said she built a relationship with Bulldogs head coach Fred Richter who watched her play, sending her text messages and letting her feel like she had something to offer the program.

"They really made me feel welcome," said Umbenhauer who was a standout post player during her career at Whitehall.

The Bulldogs finished last season 18-8 and once again qualified for the Freedom Conference playoffs, marking the 16th consecutive year they accomplished the feat.

Umbenhauer said she'll be studying to become a physician's assistant, and DeSales provided an excellent opportunity for a degree in that program. It was also close to home, another attractive feature.

As she prepares for the next phase of her life, Umbenhauer said that playing two sports at Whitehall meant a lot of sweat and sacrifice. She spent many hours in the gym as well as the weight room, all in an effort to maximize her ability and keep her endurance up.

When she arrives at DeSales, she wants to make an impact as best she can on the court.

"I want to be a part of the team and make a presence there," said Umbenhauer.

Soccer player Jacob Pesarcik will become Husky this fall. The senior will be heading to Bloomsburg University where he'll suit up for head coach Paul Payne.

After visiting several schools in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Pesarcik said that once he stepped onto the university grounds at Bloomsburg, he felt this was the perfect match.

"I really liked the campus and what they had to offer," said Pesarcik.

Pesarcik got to meet the coaches and some of the players, talking about what it's like to play soccer in the PSAC and what to expect in the next four years.

The senior goalkeeper is excited to join a Huskies team that finished 9-8-1, especially since they bring in a strong freshman class, said Pesarcik.

His head coach at Whitehall, Gus Garcia, said that Pesarcik has all the qualities necessary to succeed at the next level.

"[Jacob is a] great individual, quality player, and high level student," said Garcia. "He was my primary captain, my WHS nominee for the LVC scholar athlete. A composed, thoughtful young man with a strong competitive spirit."

Pesarcik will study psychology at Bloomsburg. He said he's been playing soccer since he was a toddler and the sport has taught him a lot of valuable lessons. It stresses teamwork and responsibility, rewarding those who adhere to those precepts.

Once he begins as a Husky, Pesarcik said his goal is to "start as a freshman as a goalkeeper."

John Johnson, a multiple threat in three sports at Whitehall, will be a member of the East Stroudsburg University football team this fall. He'll be joining a team that finished 5-5 last year under the tutelage of head coach Denny Douds.

Johnson played defensive back defense and tailback on offense, and whenever he touched the ball, there was always the possibility of a score. He was also an integral part of their basketball team, and a top sprinter on the track team.

Mark Roth will be heading to Alderson-Broaduss College to play golf for the Battlers. The school, located in Philippi, West Virginia, is beginning their inaugural seasons in both men's and women's golf this fall. The program is under the leadership of Brian Shiffbauer, Jr. who will coach the nascent teams.

Braylynn Reimer is another member of this last signing class to go to DeSales University. Reimer will head to the Center Valley, Pa. campus to play for Rachel Turocsy as a member of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs just completed a season where they won the Freedom Conference Championship. After qualifying for the NCAA Division III softball tournament and winning two games before they were ousted, the Bulldogs finished with a 30-12-1 record.

Reimer was a four-year varsity starter for head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend, providing substantial pop from her first base position.

Jacob Szakal., who played golf and baseball at Whitehall, will be off to Wesley College in Dover, Delaware this fall. The senior will join a talented Wolverines squad that had a number of players excel in the Capital Athletic Conference this year under head coach Rick McCall.
