Peters, Valley fall in Cup tournament
Weather and time worked against Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team as they were eliminated from the tournament last week after losses to Tri-Cape and Burlington County.
Lehigh Valley's first game last Wednesday resulted in an early morning 5-2 loss to Tri-Cape, but Lehigh Valley came back with a 4-0 victory over Olympic Colonial in the afternoon.
"In the first game, we didn't really hit, and we struggled with pitching," said Northampton catcher, Hannah Peters. "[In the second game] we just knew that, because we didn't hit well, we knew we had to get ourselves together."
Peters hit a double in the first inning against Olympic Colonial, scoring on a double by teammate, Meghan Williams of Salisbury.
Northern Lehigh's Amber Thomas and Pen Argyl's Emily Smull pitched the shutout for Lehigh Valley.
Lehigh Valley's win against Olympic Colonial provided a needed boost for the local team, which would have to wait approximately five hours before its final game of the day.
About to face an undefeated Burlington County team, the game was further delayed by thunder and lightning.
Burlington County took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and scored four more runs in the third. Lehigh Valley scored two runs in the fifth inning, but the game was eventually called on account of darkness.
"Once those clouds started rolling in, it put a damper on things. I was a little bit disappointed, but it happens," Peters said.
Peters was 3 for 3 in Lehigh Valley's 8-2 loss with a single and two doubles.
"Personally, I was hitting the ball well, and my defense was pretty solid as well," said Peters. "I think it would have helped to have another pitcher there. (Emmaus's Olivia Marcks was committed to another tournament.) The girls, in general were great. We were always laughing. Our personalities gelled. It was just a great group of girls."
