LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Local volleyball players named all-state

Seven local seniors were named to the PIAA 3A and 2A all-state volleyball teams last week for the boys' season.

Bethlehem Catholic's Evan Blair (OH) and Bryan Brown (setter) both were named to the 2A team, while Emmaus' Gabe Shankweiler (OH), Collin Stanton (OH), Nazareth's Galin Swigart (OH), Parkland's Michael Lewis (setter) and Whitehall's Nick Kuti (OH) rounded out the 3A contingent.

After a memorable season for the Whitehall boys' side, which saw them reach the district final and compete in state play, head coach George Cowitch was happy to have another highlight on their 2013 campaign.

"We are proud as a program for Nick," Cowitch said. "It was well deserved and a testament to his hard work he put in to being one of the greats in our program."

Last week's all-state announcement commences the volleyball season, as the girls' 3A and 2A teams were named last fall.

Bethlehem Catholic's Lauren Hess (OH) and Maddie Titus (setter) helped Becahi towards capturing the District 11 2A title last fall. They were both 2A selections, which is something that head coach Paul Abi-Daher was proud of.

"Anytime you get recognized, it's a great feeling of accomplishment. The more Becahi is recognized, the better it is for the program," said Abi-Daher.

Liberty's Brooke Priestas, who is only a junior, was named to the 3A squad as an outside hitter, along with Freedom's Rylie Haas.

Of the 50 selections in 3A, Priestas was one of 15 underclassmen to be named to the team.

Other local selections included Parkland's trio of Taylor Krause, Alicia Weigel and Kelly Robertson. Emmaus' Lisa Wallitsch, Nazareth's Jane Lukas and Southern Lehigh's Melann Amory and Nicolette Yates round out the 3A representatives.

Notre Dame's Mary Paige Nesfeder and Darcy Wolf of Central Catholic also were named to the 2A squad.
