Fullerton is battling the weather, too
It seems the weatherman isn't fond of baseball this summer.
The Fullerton Legion baseball team is well aware of that fact. They had two games scheduled for Monday, one of which was the continuation of a suspended game with Emmaus, while the other was a full game against the same team. However, the weatherman threatened more rain over an already waterlogged Henry Glasser Field, forcing the cancellation.
That weather interruption followed Sunday's day-night double header, another forced scheduling adjustment due to the rains.
General manager Jim Hein said the Ramblers won both those games on Sunday, elevating their record to 8-7 in the Lehigh Valley Legion.
They won the first game against South Parkland, 6-5, then followed that up with a 4-1 win over Northern Valley. Hein said they were at the ballpark about five hours that day as make-up games are piling up late in the season.
"It's really been a challenge trying to get all these games in," said Hein.
While rain has wreaked havoc this summer, it hasn't dampened the excitement Fullerton has been experiencing as of late. Winners of three out of their last four games, Fullerton may have had their best game in Sunday's opener. Hein said they were trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh when Dalton Buskirk stepped to the plate. With two runners on and two outs, Dalton needed a hit to possibly tie or win the game. But once he had two strikes on him, the odds were back in the pitcher's favor.
Hein said that Buskirk beat the odds, delivering a sharp single that plated both runners, winning the game for Fullerton.
"That was pretty exciting," said Hein. "I told the runners, at the crack of the bat you guys are running. They both made it and we ended up winning that game."
The winning pitcher was Tyler Correll who went the distance for the victory. He allowed six hits over seven, giving the Ramblers a solid performance from the hill.
In the second game, Hein said that Jeffery Charles took command on the mound, beating a "really tough team" in Northern Valley. Northern Valley is currently fourth in the league with a 10-6 record.
"He did a real good job against them," said Hein.
Charles now has two wins and a save this season while sporting a 2.45 ERA. Also pitching well for Fullerton is Matthew Bonshak who has a 2.55 ERA.
Hein also said their defense was "awesome" against Northern Valley, another important aspect to the victory.
The fireworks at the plate came from the bat of Zach Delp who belted a home run to help the Ramblers get the win. Hein said that Zach Stopay also has a good day at the plate in the 4-1 victory.
Fullerton has been getting good offense from a number of players. Brandon Purrone is currently batting .389, while Matthew Bonshak is hitting .409. Correll is also red hot at the plate, hitting .389, and Zach Delp is hitting .250 with three RBIs.
With Sunday's two wins, the Ramblers are virtually assured of a playoff spot. They have three more games to play, and Hein said that each one of those is winnable.
"We definitely have a good team," said Hein. "When we have everybody, and we're playing good, we can beat anybody."
