Ceremony to mark opening
The Borough of Northampton will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, celebrating the opening of the Northampton Farmers Market on Main Street near the Roxy Theater.
Victor Rodite, borough community planner and catalyst for the project, said Hunsicker's Twin Maple Farms, Hower's Covered Bridge Farm and Tom's Baba Nonna have agreed to be part of the market, which will be open 3-7 p.m. Tuesdays. Ample parking is available on Main Street and the borough parking lot off center Street.
Twin Maple Farms, the first to sign on, will offer produce including new red and white potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, turnips, carrots, spinach and peppers. By July 16, Twin Maple will offer sweet corn, tomatoes and eggplant.
Garry Hunsicker, his son Stevan and nephew Travis Hahn, along with other family members, will greet and talk to visitors at the market.
Hower's Covered Bridge Farm, run by Kelly Hower, will offer hot pepper specialties and sampling. Covered Bridge peppers come in all levels of heat: Hungarian, ancho poblano, cayenne, cherry hots, jalapeno, habanero and ghost.
Five colors of sweet peppers will also be available. Tomatoes include round, plum, cherry, pear and grape to be available at various times during the season. Okra, cucumbers, squash, beans, beets, onions, potatoes, eggplant and herbs will be for sale.
Hower also will offer recipes.
Baba Noona will delight visitors with Italian and Slovak favorites including Italian wine, cookies, walnut and fruit kiffles and nutrolls.
Known to their visitors as Tom and Margo, they will bring special foods as haluski, pierogies and manicotti.
Rodite said several years ago there was an indoor farmers market located in town but it closed several years ago.
