Catty Connie Mack waiting to see playoff opponent
During the final few games of the Lehigh Valley Connie Mack League (LVCM), Catasauqua simply had to wait it turn. Its turn, however, to see what seed the Roughies would land in next week's opening round of the LVCM playoffs that will begin Monday, July 8.
Catasauqua finished with an overall 12-5 record and firmly had a grip on the fourth seed. Yet, the Roughies may be bumped up to the third seed depending on some outcomes of games played over a stretch of the final three days of the regular season that began this past Monday.
Anywhere they may fall, Catty will be ready.
"The highest we could go is third," said head coach Jim Kober of his team's seed that could have been finally decided at press time. "We had a shot at third, but a few things had to happen.
"We have been relatively healthy this season and we didn't need the time off for injuries. Still, these kids have been practicing with the JV program since January and it has been a long grind for them. We'll get some practices in and simulate as much as we can before Monday."
Down the stretch, Catty posted a pair of impressive victories in their final tow outings of the regular season.
In a 3-1 victory over Stroudsburg, Jim Kober - the coach's son - scattered four hits over five innings and Nate Pontician hurled the final two innings top preserve the victory.
Pontician helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, and Matt Rodger knocked in a pair of runs.
In the season finale, Dakotah Schiffer went the distance in a six-inning stint as he pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out six in a 10-0 whitewash of Moore Township.
Alex Torres went 2-for-3 with four RBIs paced by a triple and a sacrifice fly and Joe Rothrock added a pair of doubles that helped bring in three runs. Kober also swiped a pair of bases in the win.
Head coach Kober has watched a steady stream of offense all season. He sees his club continuing their ways in the postseason that will feature a best-of-three series.
"We haven't had any surprised all season," he stated. "We have a team here that has been consistent and every one of them has chipped in along the way. We'll take the time off to simulate as many game situations as we can with them.
"From here, it is a short season, but our pitching and hitting has been consistent. We just have to be ready for all situations."
