Lehigh Valley defeated in Carpenter Cup

Weather and time worked against Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team as they were eliminated from the tournament last week after losses to Tri-Cape and Burlington County.

Lehigh Valley's first game last Wednesday resulted in an early morning 5-2 loss to Tri-Cape, but Lehigh Valley came back with a 4-0 victory over Olympic Colonial in the afternoon.

"When we got there, we weren't as sharp as we usually are, but once we got going, we didn't want to go home. Our adrenaline was up, but that four hour wait...," said third baseman, Emily Cecchini.

Lehigh Valley was scheduled to begin its third game at 5:45 p.m., but the game was further delayed by thunder and lightning.

"It was a long time to wait. It had that impact on us. We definitely tried, but we had to come back from that long of a wait," Cecchini said.

In the end, Lehigh Valley lost to Burlington County 8-2, and the game was called on account of darkness.

"I definitely think it was very rushed, trying to get everything in, but we can't do anything about it," Cecchini said.

Cecchini had a single and a walk in the Burlington County game, and got on base on an error in the Olympic Colonial game.

Teammate and second baseman, Nicole Iasiello, shared playing time with Pleasant Valley's Jordan Meckes.

Regarding Lehigh Valley's losses, Iasiello said, "We hit the ball a lot [against Tri-Cape], but we couldn't get the hits together. Olympic Colonial was decent, and they had solid defense. [Regarding Burlington County] at that point we wanted to get the game in. We had a five-hour break, but they were playing the game right before."

The Carpenter Cup tournament was the first for Iasiello.

"It was a very good experience to go through. It was a good group, and we had a lot of fun. Once we got into the rhythm, things fused together," she said.

The Lehigh Valley team was coached by John Eyer of Emmaus.
