Peters, LV win opener before rain
Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team, which includes Northampton High School catcher, Hannah Peters, defeated Philadelphia Catholic's Carpenter Cup team, 10-5, in its first game of the double-elimination tournament on Monday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
Peters caught for the first half of the game with Pen Argyl's Emily Smull doing the pitching.
"It was good. She hit her spots well. It was a good match-up. She got the work done," Peters said.
Philadelphia Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Lehigh Valley was not concerned.
"I was confident with our team and knew we could come back and get those hits and runs," said Peters.
In the third inning, a hit by Smull put Lehigh Valley ahead, and Peters, who was fifth in the batting order, contributed two singles to Lehigh Valley's ultimate victory.
"I think that, because we haven't played a lot together, maybe we were a little nervous, and once the game got underway, we played like we know how," Peters said. "[Notre Dame's] Sam [Curcio] had a nice hit to left center, and it hit off the fence. It was a nice shot."
Lehigh Valley's five-run victory provided a confidence-booster, heading in to its second game of the day against Tri-Cape.
"We knew we had to win the first game to be seeded well in the tournament, and we knew we needed another win," said Peters.
Thunderstorms, however, postponed the rest of the day's games, so Lehigh Valley will return to FDR Park at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday to face Tri-Cape.
The Carpenter Cup Softball Tournament also serves as a showcase for college coaches.
Peters said, "I saw Temple and Penn State [coaches]. There were a whole bunch. There were four or five that I saw."
