Fullerton headed to the playoffs
When they were sitting with a 6-4 record, Fullerton's chances for a playoff spot in Lehigh Valley Connie Mack were sketchy. With a recent four-game winning streak, their chances suddenly have become clearer.
In the final week of the regular season, Fullerton will likely receive either a fifth- or sixth seed when they playoffs begin July 8.
"We definitely have had a pretty good season so far," said head coach Jeff Scheuren. "These guys have really brought it all together for us. We didn't know where we would be at one point of the season, but everything seems to be working out."
Scheuren knew the season might develop over time.
"We had eight new players this season," noted Scheuren. "We also had seven developing players this year. When we looked at our roster, it was about half and half with new and returning players. This is a team that would get better with time."
Scheuren credited the pitching of Jacob Fink, who has been the workhorse of the team this summer. Fink has pitched the majority of innings for the team and he has whirled his share of stellar outings as he compiled an overall 6-1 record heading into the final week of the season.
"Jacob (Fink) has really carried us this season," said Scheuren. "We had some rainouts in the early part of the season, and it gave him more chances to pitch for us.(Fink) can throw a few different pitches and he has really developed into our stopper this season.
"But we do have a few guys who can pitch for us this season. (Fink) has done a good job in leading a staff that has as many as seven different players who can pitch for us. Yet, Fink is the guy who can pitch seven innings for us every time he goes put there."
Offensively, Fullerton has been consistently paced by Dalton Buskirk, Jimmy Scheuren, Nick Delp, and R.J. Figueroa. Fullerton has averaged a little over eight runs a game.
"Those guys have really done a great job for us all year," stressed Scheuren. "They have hit the ball well for us all year and have come up with big hits for us. We're looking forward to them leading us in the next few weeks. Overall, we have hit the ball pretty well as a team."
Scheuren is sanguine his team can have a strong finish as they endured a stretch in which they had seven games in 10 days. It also has been a transformation from a 5-15 mark last season.
"They have jelled well together," he stated about his team. "Still, we have to hit to win. We'll have our work cut out for us, but we already overcome some things. We'll be all right down the stretch.
