Fullerton eyes a playoff berth
When lightning interrupted the Lehigh Valley Legion game between Fullerton and South Parkland, the Ramblers were leading 3-1.
But Mother Nature decided to erase the game from the record books. Gone are the hits, runs, strikeouts and walks since the game only lasted four innings before streaks of electrostatic discharge pierced the night sky.
That means they'll have to start fresh and General Manager Jim Hein knows that they'll have to stay on an even keel if they want to make the playoffs. Right now they're 5-5 and Hein said that playing .500 ball the rest of the way will get them where they want to go.
"If we do that, we'll make the playoffs," said Hein. "Eight teams make the playoffs, and that's what we're hoping for.
Fullerton currently sits in the sixth spot.
Hein said the team recently experienced a bit of a stumbling block, losing their last two games. He said they faced some pretty tough pitching, getting shutout by 10-0 by Salisbury on Sunday.
Hein said the team is now starting to jell as players get back into the rhythm of playing Legion baseball following their other sports calendar commitments. He said many of their players attend football and basketball camps which takes a toll on their bodies.
"They're struggling a little bit, and if we can just get them back on track, we should be fine," said Hein.
Hein said they're capable of playing with anyone in the league, referencing their 3-2 loss to league leader North Parkland on June 11.
"That was a good game," said Hein.
Hein said that some of their losses have boiled down to a bad inning or a missed opportunity in the field, any number of small details which have been their Achilles heel.
"It's usually one pitch that hurts us," said Hein. "We'll be doing good and one pitch will get away and … Bang."
Offensively, the Ramblers have been getting solid performances from Jeffrey Charles who's batting .368. Also, Brandon Purrone is tearing the cover off the ball, hitting .467. Tyler Correll has also gone rip city, batting .364, while Matt Bonshak is batting .286.
On the mound, the Ramblers are led by Charles who has two wins and a 2.33 ERA. Matt Bonshak has also toed the rubber, winning one game while posting a 3.00 ERA.
Hein said they've been aided by a strong team effort this season.
"They're all doing good," he said.
