Scouts hold annual auction

The rain didn't scare anyone way from the 42nd annual auction held June 10 by Boy Scout Troop 50.

The auction, which took place in the garage behind the Moore Township municipal building, was well attended as usual.

This year the Scouts auctioned off an autographed baseball signed by Pete Rose. The baseball came in a glass showcase and was donated by the Sands Casino of Bethlehem. It was valued at $100 but fetched $60 from a customer.

Businesses and residents from the area donate items for the Troop 50 auction every year, said Chuck Longacre, one of the organizers of the event.

"One year we auctioned off a time share for a vacation," Longacre said.

Wil Hahn of the Hahn Auction Company in Bath was the auctioneer, as he has been for decades. The auction usually raises between $1,500 and $3,000.

Longacre said the Scouts use the auction for fundraising instead of breakfasts or yard sales because they can get the funding they needed with just one auction a year.

"It's an efficient method of fundraising," Longacre said, "and people like it."

Items auctioned ranged from baked goods to art, books, CDs, tools and popular gift certificates from area restaurants.
