Notre Dame notes: Farewell, class of 2013
Ending my previous column with sentimental feelings, I must begin this one with the same retrospective attitude, as the sentimentality is now full force. Graduation parties are beginning, elders are offering their advice regarding the future and the fact that the Notre Dame class of 2013 will never be together, all 122 of us, again after graduation on June 2 is beginning to sink in.
I have decided to adopt the perspective of A.A. Milne, speaking through Winnie the Pooh saying, "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." On behalf of the class of 2013, I would like to extend my gratitude to anyone who had any part in the past four years of my life, making them memorable to say the least.
Although the seniors take the spotlight at the end of the year, Notre Dame has an undeniably bright future with the remaining student body. Taking over as executive board president of student council is Gabi Grys with Catherine Hamilton as the new vice president. Christine Lepore takes over as the secretary and Matt Sanchez as the treasurer. With student council advisor Cheryl Fenton continuing her reign and providing guidance for the council, another year packed with activities is in the future.
Athletically, Notre Dame is ending the year strong with spring sports. The baseball team finished second in the District, falling to Salisbury in the championship game at Coca Cola Park. The Track and Field team, led by coach Art Corrigan, sent 11 athletes to the PIAA State Championships at Shippensburg University.
Junior Dan Stola, a long jumper, and junior Reggie Carter, a high jumper, both broke school records this season. Stola jumped 44 feet 2 inches while Carter soared 6 feet 6 inches above the high jump bar. Carter brought home the team's sole state medal, earning sixth in the AA boys high jump.
As for the girls, both the 4x4 and 4x8 relay teams qualified for the championships, as well as senior Katie Downing qualifying for the mile and sophomore Christina Scartelli for the 800. Mary Paige Nesfeder qualified for both discus and high jump.
Taking a turn to appreciate the performing arts, junior Michael Guerriere earned the school's only Freddy award this year, winning the honor of Outstanding Performance by a Featured Dancer for his role as Marcellus Washburn in the production of "The Music Man."
Notre Dame continues going strong in the summer, holding many sports camps throughout the summer months. A list of camps is on the website, as well as information regarding registration.
Signing out for the last time as a student columnist for the Bethlehem Press, I thank the readers graciously for reading my column and send best wishes their way. For more information regarding happenings at Notre Dame, please check the website at www.ndcrusaders.org. On behalf of Notre Dame High School, have a safe and blessed summer.
