Herbert Katz

Herbert Kem Katz, 91, of Allentown, died June 11, 2013.

He was the loving husband of the late Helen Ferrara Katz for 57 years, and loving father of his three children, Andrea and her husband Charles Welch, Cynthia, and Jeffrey and his wife, Danica Katz.

He loved and was loved by his three grandchildren, Alena, Emily and Jacob.

He was predeceased by his sister, Minnie Miller and brother, Harry.

Active locally in business, education and the community, he served for 24 years on the Parkland School Board, serving three terms as president.

He served for 24 years on the Board of the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, serving two terms as chairman.

He also served 24 years as a trustee of Lehigh Carbon Community College, serving two terms as chairman of the board of trustees.

He served for 11 years on the South Whitehall Park and Recreation Board and was one of the founders and first president of Westwood Heights Swim Club.

In 2007, LCCC awarded him the college's first Honorary Doctorate degree, an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service.

In 2005, the Sertoma Club of Allentown awarded him its Service to Mankind Award for significant and meritorious service.

In 1979, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Parkland Area Jaycees, and he received numerous certificates of appreciation from the Parkland School Board during his service as a board director.

Beginning in 1940 and continuing to the present, he worked as a co-owner or independent contractor selling packaging and paper products.

For 20 years, from 1955-75, he owned and operated Teddy Bear Discount Mart and Toy Store in Stroudsburg.

He was a member of the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945, serving as a sergeant with the 313th Troop Carrier, 82nd Airborne and Pathfinder Squadron in North Africa and Europe.

A member of Congregation Keneseth Israel and Congregation Sons of Israel, he was given honorary lifetime membership in the Allentown Jewish Community Center.

He will be forever missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the LCCC Foundation, 4525 Education Park, Schnecksville, PA 18078, or to a charity of your choice.
