LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

SP falls in short game

With a flash flood warning until 9 p.m. it wasn't the rain, but the lack of light that ended the legion baseball game between South Parkland and West Allentown early last Tuesday night at J Birney Crum field.

With no outs, a runner on second and West Allentown leading 7-0, the umpiring crew was forced to call the game when they heard players complain of not being able to see the ball well. West Allentown got revenge for an opening day loss to South Parkland back on June 5.

West Allentown saw three runners cross home plate that inning before darkness took over. A steady rain that began in the top of the fifth also caused some problems for the team, but not enough to call it.

The Trojans were the first to threaten in the first inning. Kyle Buchman led off the game with a single up the middle on a 1-2 pitch, and advanced to second on a balk the next pitch.

Two batters later Zach Miller walked, and Buchman took third on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with one out. But the inning ended quickly when Miller was thrown out trying to steal second, and starting pitcher Tyler Metz struck out Hudson Rabenold to end the frame.

West Allentown took the lead in the bottom half of the first. Justin Kratz reached on an error, and then stole second. He advanced to third on a flyout, and then came home via a sacrifice fly by Leandro Mendez.

Metz settled in to keep South Parkland hitless over the next three innings.

West Allentown added a run each in the second and third innings to lead 3-0 after three.

A controversial run was scored in the bottom of the third. Chris Czonstka came all the way around from first base when Zach Blose chopped a ground ball between starting pitcher Jacob Toney and his first baseman. Toney quick fielded the ball and flipped to first but no one was covering so the ball landed in the grass past first base. The ball was ruled to have never reached the out of play boundary, and Czonstka motored all the way around to score.

Toney helped himself out in the top of the fifth with a base hit, but was stranded on third after a couple of wild pitches allowed him to advance. The Trojans were held to just two hits over the six innings.

West Allentown added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Kratz singled, stole second and third and came home on a passed ball. In the bottom of the sixth his team put the game out of reach with three more runs before the game was called.

Toney went the distance and gave up five hits while striking out three. South Parkland, which is 1-6 through the early part of an 18-game season, will play five games within the next five days.
